The Churchville Fire Department needs to expand to accommodate all its new equipment.

But that required a zoning change.

The Augusta County Board of Supervisors approved 6-1 the request so the fire department can better serve the community.

Deputy Fire Chief Craig Williams said they will build a two story building.

The project will cost around $1.2 million.

Williams said they will use the $125,000 the board granted them last year.

The remaining funds will come from fundraising and USDA grants.

He said they can't fit the growing number of volunteers or equipment in the current station.

"When our engine is due for replacement, they don't make them that small anymore so we have to go to a next larger size to make it fit in our building," Williams said.

Joseph Condo lives across the fire station.

He spoke in front of the board of supervisors against the expansion.

He said they already have enough noise with the sirens throughout the day.

"Making all the noise that they want whenever they want. Is that what we are looking forward to the new addition to the building?" Condo said.
