HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Doctors say Hepatitis C is a virus you may not know you have because often there are no symptoms.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can cause everything from liver damage to death.

The CDC recommends that if you were born between 1945 to 1965, you should consider getting tested for the virus.

Doctor Ganesh Kini, the Medical Director at RMH, said some of the reasons for that include certain hazards during blood transfusions thirty years ago.

People can also contract the virus from injection drug use or through multiple sexual partners.

According to the CDC, baby boomers are five times more likely to be infected.

Symptoms to look out for when it comes to acute Hepatitis C include nausea, fevers and abdominal pain.

Dr. Kini wants to be clear that although this isn't a major problem, it doesn't hurt to get checked out by your physician.

"It's not like an epidemic. However, it is important to see your doctor if you have symptoms of fatigue, anorexia, that cannot be explained from something else. And the doctor knows what to do after the first blood test," said Dr. Kini.

There are two kinds of Hepatitis C. Chronic is the type that will need treatment, which will differ for everyone depending on their bodies.

If it is not treated, the disease can cause liver damage, cirrhosis and even death.
