HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV)-- Every year in October, the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission celebrates Rideshare Week. Their goal is to highlight the benefits of carpooling and thank those that already use alternative transportation.
This week, the commission is giving free doughnuts and coffee to carpooling drivers across the state.
They are also having a photo contest. Everyone who sends in a picture of their alternative transportation gets a free $10 gift card to Dunkin' Donuts.
Rebecca Joyce is the Senior Planner and Program Manager at the Planning District Commission. She said carpooling can save wear and tear on the roads and help decrease costs going to and from work.
Joyce said carpooling also helps the environment and the trend is catching on.
"Do to the economy and gas prices, we have seen an increase in our area over the past several years. More people are carpooling now then ever before," said Joyce.
To help with carpooling, the commission has provided a matching service on its website. The software even allows you to list preferences such as: smoking, non-smoking and music style.
