Though gas prices have come down a little in recent weeks, the prices have many considering the cost of long trips.
That's especially true for people planning their summer vacations.
Campgrounds have seen an increase in the number of bookings this summer, and they say gas prices may be to thank.
More people are looking to vacation closer to home and finding that local campgrounds are the solution. KOA Campgrounds in Staunton has seen more local vacationers making reservations.
Workers say visitors want to feel like they're getting far away but don't want to pay the gas to get there.
With a lake, pool and entertainment, campgrounds seem to meet that need, especially to many RV owners who really feel the pinch at the pump every time they refuel.
"The area campgrounds are experiencing that too where people don't want to go quite as far but still feel like they have a vacation experience at a much lower cost than anticipated," says KOA Campground Manager Michael Desper.
Local campgrounds also say they're fortunate there are so many attractions in the Valley because even locals on vacation will discover something they've never done before.
