HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A new Politico poll shows that McAuliffe is now 9 points ahead of Cuccinelli since the shutdown. More than 1,000 people were surveyed on who they would vote for in an election.

At an event this weekend, Cuccinelli and Ted Cruz were spotted together.

It isn't what the candidate for governor said that's garnering attention, it's what he didn't say. Specifically about the government shutdown.

"And his comment is, I'm running for governor and that's all we should worry about, said David McQuilkin, a political analyst.

Days before the event, the McAuliffe campaign released an ad. In it he called Ted Cruz, the Republican leader of the shutdown.

"Cruz is coming into town for another radical Republican, Ken Cuccinelli, so don't believe Cuccinelli's ridiculous ads, because supporting a government shutdown is nothing new to Cuccinelli," said a narrator in a political ad for the McAuliffe campaign.

McQuilkin says by linking Ted Cruz to the Cuccinelli campaign, McAuliffe is trying to sway voters.

"Then you're going to hopefully tie him with that and by doing so take a significant portion of the voting public," said McQuilkin.

"I have asked the legislators, please do not send me a bill, because the governor has to sign for the budget to come into effect. Please do not send me a bill unless the medicaid expansion is included," said McAuliffe in a political ad for the Cuccinelli campaign.

"There is certainly a significant conflict between the Republicans in the Congress and the President over where we should be going and what we should be doing and what should be done," said McQuilkin.

McQuilkin says right now both candidates have found their weaknesses.Cuccinelli has his own strategy, "he's trying to do the same thing in his context that McAuliffe is doing right now, it just depends on where's the opportunity."
