SHENANDOAH VALLEY, Va. (WHSV) -- Across the Valley, people are collecting gently used shoes to help raise money for widows and their children in Kenya, needing a place to live.

Every year, they have received about 28,000 pairs of shoes.

The project started more than five years ago and organizers said the money they get from these shoes goes a long way.

Lynne Diveley, one of the organizers of the project, said once they bundle the shoes and sell them, all the money goes towards building homes in Kenya.

Cindy Mims, another organizer of the project, said without the stress of paying rent, children have a greater chance of going to school and their quality of life for the family is greatly improved.

So far, the Shenandoah Valley has helped more than 500 people, an impact Mims has seen first hand.

"I saw the land where they lived, or the apartment that they lived in, and then I got to see their new home and the transformation is just incredible. I walked away knowing I was going to be processing shoes for a very long time," said Mims.
