Members of the Augusta County Sheriff's Office hosted a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Saturday for one of their own.

Augusta County Deputy Joe Sholes crashed his cruiser while on duty.

"I'm getting better everyday. I've been getting in and out of the car. Just trying to get back in the swing of things," Sholes said.

When the crash happened in January, Sholes was on his way to a fight involving six people.

He said the help of others has made his recovery easier. He said his family has received multiple donations from churches, neighbors and anonymous people.

"Just to have all the support from the community and the people around. It has really been great. It has been a blessing," Sholes said.

Augusta County Corporal Derek Almarode said more than 30 volunteers helped with selling tickets, cooking and serving food at the spaghetti dinner.

"It's really important for us to let Joe know that his service doesn't go unseen and we care about that service and the community cares about that service," Almarode said.

He also noted the money raised will help Sholes family with every day expenses since he and his wife are both on leave.

"Their ability to earn any kind of overtime or any revenue like that for the family, they can't. This is a way for us to help support them and supplement that lost revenue at this point, " Almarode said.

Frank Summers attended the dinner with his wife and friends. He said he didn't know Sholes personally but he wanted to thank him for his service.

"He was doing his duty and now we're doing our duty to help him out," Summers said.

Sholes said for him is an honor to serve neighbors in Augusta County.

"You don't get a lot of 'thank you.' It's nice to know that people really appreciate law enforcement and what we do and it really makes you wanna feel good about what you do," Sholes said.

This is the second fundraiser the deputies at the Sheriff's Office hosted for Sholes.

Almarode said the deputies are planning another fundraiser for March 8.
