HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV)-- Virginia State Police have cited hundreds for texting and driving, just months after enforcing it as a primary offense.

Teachers at the Shenandoah Valley Driving School in Harrisonburg are using new methods to keep these numbers down for new drivers.

Driving instructor Diane Horst plays a game with tennis balls to teach her students, "They can usually catch the one tennis ball, but they can never catch the both of them, and we say 'but I thought you said you could text and drive.'"

Horst said it simulates similar distractions such as texting and driving, "It really does send a message to them that, I can't do two things at once."

State Police said they've issued 328 citations across Virginia since July 1.

But locally, there have been only two citations in Rockingham County, one in Augusta County, and none in Staunton or Waynesboro.

But even so, Virginia State Police Sergeant Frank Pyanoe said, "It's fast becoming the number one leading cause of traffic crashes in the commonwealth."

He's taking the offense seriously, "It is going to be something that we will be stringently enforcing."

That is something Horst is passionate about, "It's got to hurt, because people are getting killed. So the penalty should be stronger, that's my opinion."

Local police said this offense is still very hard to detect because unless people have their phones up,it's very hard to notice.
