VERONA, Va. -- A recent transaction that started on Craigslist ended up with the arrest of Derek Shifflett.
Shifflett allegedly set up a deal to sell a car for $12,000 and when the buyer showed up the car wasn't there. That's when Shifflett allegedly pushed the victim to the ground and ran off with the victim's $12,000.
Augusta County Sheriff Sergeant David Lotts, warned that fraud is on the rise and offered some tips on how to protect yourself.
He said, "We're seeing a lot more fraud, Internet fraud and so forth. The main thing is just to be cautious with who you are dealing with. Be sure who you are dealing with is who they are purporting to be."
The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation. They believe others were involved in the conspiracy.
