HARRISONBURG,Va. (WHSV) -- A Harrisonburg woman is dead after a crash on Interstate 81 at mile marker 245, Harrisonburg's Fire Dept. Chief confirms.
Maria B. Simonov-Romero, 20, of Harrisonburg died in the crash.
Simonov-Romero was driving a 2000 Nissan SUV south, crossed over the median, went airborne, entered the northbound lanes and hit a tractor trailer. It's still unknown why she crossed over the median.
State police say the driver of the tractor trailer did not suffer any injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
The crash happened at about 6:40 a.m. It closed all lanes of the interstate in both directions. As of 12:45 p.m both northbound lanes are open and only one lane is open southbound. By 8:20 a.m. one lane was open in both directions.
"The SUV is completely consumed. The cab of the tractor trailer is pretty well consumed. Both vehicles are totaled. The trailer appears to have some minor damage. The trailer will probably be salvageable, but the other two motor vehicles probably will not be," said Chief Larry Shifflett with the Harrisonburg Fire Department.
Smoke was visible from the traffic camera.
Moments after the initial crash, two other tractor trailers in the northbound lanes collided while trying to avoid the crash. There were no injuries in this crash.
