STAUNTON -- With 24 days left until Election Day, Virginia's gubernatorial candidates are well aware every move is important.

On Saturday afternoon Republican candidate Ken Cuccinelli made several stops in the Valley as part of an effort to entice voters - and to get them to the polls on Nov. 5.

"October is the month when people in these state races start to pay serious attention, and we - as you saw here today - are talking to volunteers about reaching out to voters one at a time," Cuccinelli told WHSV during his stop in Staunton.

Cuccinelli asked volunteers to knock on doors and make phone calls for his campaign, a strategy both sides are finding critical heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe was in Hampton Roads on Saturday, speaking at kickoff events with General Wesley Clark (ret.) before volunteers went door-to-door.

The latest Real Clear Politics poll average shows McAuliffe is leading the race, with an average of 43.7 percent. Cuccinelli trails by six points, with 36.9 percent. Meanwhile, libertarian Robert Sarvis has 9.4 percent in the RCP average.

Cuccinelli told WHSV he is not especially concerned about Sarvis playing the spoiler and drawing votes away from the Republican ticket.

"We compete and try to compete for every single vote, whether they're thinking about Robert or whether they're thinking about Terry McAuliffe. I have Democrat support, I have independent support, I have libertarian support, I even have vegetarian support. So we're reaching across all sorts of spectrums."

Cuccinelli rallied volunteers in Harrisonburg and Staunton before attending the Fall Foliage Festival in Waynesboro.

On Friday former Rep. Ron Paul endorsed Cuccinelli, an endorsement Cuccinelli said he is proud to have won.
