HARRISONBURG -- The family of a Rockingham County man convicted of unlawful wounding is moving on after a two day trail.
Rudy Dean Jr shot Robert Crawford in January 2012 in an alleged case of road rage near Elkton.
Members of the Dean family mostly wanted to thank the community for all of its work supporting them during the past year. They said they're thankful they will still be able to spend time together as a family.
They're looking to move on after Wednesday night's conviction.
More than a year later, Susan Dean, Rudy Dean's wife, said the wait for the trial was easier thanks to good neighbors.
“It has not been that difficult, because we've had so much support. Family, friends, church, community; everywhere I turned, I was not alone, so I have no complaints,” she said.
Thousands supported Rudy Dean, who claimed he acted in self-defense. In the end, a jury decided his fate and recommended a sentenced of nine months in prison.
“The final outcome was the jury spoke. That's our system. It is what it is, and we just accept it. We're moving on to the next phase.”
Susan Dean said rallies, prayers and letters helped her family.
“We'd just like to thank everybody for all of their prayers, for all of their support, and just for being there.”
She said she expected a jury to find her husband not-guilty of the two charges he faced. Now, she's thankful Rudy Dean will get to spend more time with her.
“We have always been very blessed, and we continue to be very blessed. I'm very thankful to have my husband, and that's all I need.”
Susan Dean was also thankful they get to spend time together as a family and they plan to move on after Wednesday night's sentencing.
“What does it mean for my family and I to be together? Everything. That's all their is for us; that's all that matters.”
Rudy Dean's sentence is what's called a presentence. A judge will make that sentence formal in June.
There's a possibility Rudy Dean could get credit for time he already served in jail.
