E.W. Jackson Preaches in Staunton

STAUNTON -- What has been a busy week in the Valley for political candidates continued on Sunday.

On the heels of gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli's visit to Staunton on Saturday, lieutenant governor candidate Bishop E.W. Jackson preached in Staunton on Sunday.

The trip was just the latest of Jackson's many stops in the Shenandoah Valley over the course of the campaign.

"I think we have an opportunity to do very, very well here," Jackson told WHSV after the service. "Maybe offset some of the places where my opponent is likely to be strong - obviously in his own area, in his own district, to some extent Hampton Roads. So this area is extremely important."

Jackson's opponent, Democratic state senator Ralph Northam, toured southwest Virginia this weekend, stopping Blacksburg, Floyd, Abingdon and Wise.

The outlook of the race varies.

A poll from Christopher Newport University shows Northam leading Jackson, 48 to 37 percent.

But a poll from Hampton University shows the race deadlocked in a statistical tie. That same poll shows 23 percent of the vote is undecided.

The key to winning that undecided vote, Jackson said, is exposure - having people get to know him.

"A lot of people are concerned about my past in ministry but I think the one thing ministry says about me is I care about people," Jackson said. "I'm willing to go out of my way to help people - not just people who agree with me, but people who don't."

Jackson recognizes the importance of the office of lieutenant governor. Especially with the divided state senate, Jackson said he anticipates the lieutenant governor to have to make about 20 tie-breaking votes.
