Film Festival Brings out Creative Side of Harrisonburg

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Virginia has increasingly become a hotspot for film-making. Thursday, the Super G8 Film Festival will kickoff in Harrisonburg.

Festival leaders say events like these bring out the creative side of Harrisonburg.

This is the festival's fourth year in existence. Hundreds of people take part in this festival, every year.

All participants used one type of camera, when shooting. Festival leaders said this helped level the playing field.

Tim Estep and Paul Somers are co-founders of the Super G8 Film Festival. They said there is no editing, after a scene has been shot. So, everyone will be seeing their films for the first time.

"I feel like this festival has really made a film community in Harrisonburg. I don't think it is anything that Paul and I did. I think the community has really just taken this thing and ran with it. I've always said, this is the community's festival," said Estep.

Festival leaders say, this event will also have an impact on tourism and local revenue coming into the Shenandoah Valley. Festival organizers even expect tourists coming from all over the world.

"Every year we pack the theater. So, that is 270 people. We are always turning people away. It is a huge bummer but the theater is the perfect place for the festival. We like to keep it here even though we could probably fit more people in another venue," said Somers.

This event starts Thursday at 7 p.m. in Courtsquare Theater.
