RICHMOND, Va. -- On Wednesday, Virginia lawmakers were in Richmond for Virginia's General Assembly.

After an announcement by Gov. Bob McDonnell on Tuesday, transportation will be one of the biggest talking points in this session. Two Republican lawmakers from the Valley support the governor and hope to get enough votes to make transportation improvements.

Gov. Bob McDonnell also wants to get rid of the gas tax and increase sales tax. That would go against his campaign promise of not raising taxes.

Several other hot topics during this session will be uranium mining, teacher pay and tenure and school safety.

One of the most talked about topics in last year's session was the mandate that required women to have an ultrasound before going through an abortion. Some lawmakers want to try to repeal that this year.

On the first day of the 45 day session, lawmakers didn't accomplish much. They handled schedules and committee assignments.
