HARRISONBURG-- Gov. Bob McDonnell has released the projects he's targeting as a part of his transportation funding proposal.

This is all part of his plan to get rid of the gas tax, and increase the state's sales tax. The increased funds would help pay for these projects.

In WHSV's viewing area of Rockingham, Augusta, Page, and Shenandoah counties, there are 17 proposals, totaling more than $50 million.

The most expensive one involves replacing the Route 11 bridge that crosses over I-81 at mile marker 257, which would cost more than $11 million.

Dpn Komara, the Harrisonburg resident engineer for VDOT, said the projects targeted by the governor are ones VDOT has prioritized.

These bridges don't necessarily need urgent repairs, but ones they want to be proactive with because of the importance of bridges in the valley.

"When you live in the valley, and there's ridges and valleys, you have a lot of bridges," said Komara. "They're a lifeline of our transportation network, so you have to be proactive in replacing those, and staying on top of those structures, and we are."

Political analysts have a predicted a tough road ahead for the plan. From Komara's perspective, he'd like to see it pass, but hopes the funding will be on the way in the future if it does not.
