As of Tuesday, charges have been filed against a 15-year-old William Monroe High School student for allegedly putting staples in his teacher's ice coffee.

At a court hearing Monday, the teen was charged with felony adulteration of food, drink, drugs, cosmetics, etc. with the intent to kill or injure any individual who ingests, inhales or uses such substance.

He appeared with his parents and his attorney.

The 15 year old could be charged as an adult, but that decision will be up to the courts.

"When a juvenile is charged under that, it's not really a felony, the charge is a delinquent act or allegations of a delinquent act," says Commonwealth's Attorney Ron Morris.

The victim of the assault, a ninth grade English teacher, unknowingly drank the staple-spiked coffee May 10 but was not seriously injured.

Maj. Randall Snead, with the Greene County Sheriff's Office, reports authorities are monitoring the teacher's condition since the damage caused by the staples may not be readily apparent.

The Greene County School Division completed its investigation in mid-May and suspended the student until a committee determines if further punishment is necessary. He could face a longer suspension or expulsion for a year.

"That involves suspensions, appearance in front of our discipline committee for the county. From there, it's whatever the discipline committee determines and it goes on from there," explains WMHS principal Mike Jamerson.

An initial court date has not been set.
