HARRISONBURG -- Sen. Mark Warner visited the Valley on Wednesday, but not everyone greeted him with a smile. Some protesters were concerned about one of his votes and marched in downtown.

“Keystone XL pipeline would bring very dirty energy from Canada, very dirty oil throughout country," said Leslie Grady, one of the protesters.

The pipeline would carry crude oil from Canada to Nebraska, but Grady was concerned about global warming.

“This is something that's gonna keep occurring. It's gonna occur for a long time, but it will impact our children, our grandchildren.”

That's why he marched with others, carrying signs that read "No KXL pipeline."

Protesters marched very close to where Sen. Mark Warner met some entrepreneurs in because Sen. Warner voted for the construction of the pipeline.

"Senator Warner will know that his constituents in Virginia are concerned and disturbed by his vote."

Sen. Warner said he understands their concerns. He said the state department released a study saying the pipeline is environmentally safe.

"We need to have all the above energy strategy that includes renewables, but it includes normal conventional sources," said Sen. Warner.

He said it helps the country in the long term. He said we need an energy policy that relies more on American fuel.

“And get rid of some of the quite honestly of the Venezuelan oil that's dirtier and from a country that's quite honestly anti-American.”

Sixty two senators from both sides of the aisle voted to approve the pipeline. The state department is still determining if the project serves for the U.S. national interest. The president will vote after.
