HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- In the past year, there have been mass shootings at schools, places of worship and now a shopping mall.

In Harrisonburg, the new focus is on public transportation.

A local security company and the Harrisonburg Department of Transportation are working hard to keep you safe on the bus.

Brant Weller at Hawk Securities supplies security systems to homes and businesses.

"We try to give them a little more security a little more piece of mind so that they can go about their day no matter which way the world's going or how dangerous it may become," said Weller.

Lately, the world has become more dangerous than he would like.

Hawk Security signed a contract with the Harrisonburg Department of Transportation (HDOT) which is in the process of building additional space.

Alex Milburn works the security systems at HDOT.

"We have nine security cameras that survey the perimeter of the building. Once our new building is complete that'll be up to twenty-three cameras," said Milburn.

All the new cameras were supplied by Hawk.

"Additionally we will have perimeter sight security with seven foot high chain linked fence all around to prevent unauthorized access after business hours," said Milburn.

On the bus there is a button you can press that will change the message on the front of the bus, alerting people of an emergency and to call 911.

There is also a red button on the bus driver's radio.

"That opens up the mic to the emergency communications center and for the next few minutes they can talk and ECC with be able to hear everything that happens on the bus," said Milburn.

Weller and Milburn are both confident that they're taking proper precautions.

"The chances of somewhere rural like Harrisonburg, becoming a target of something terrorist oriented is pretty slim," said Weller.

Milburn says the extra precautions are worth it because you'll never know what could happen.
