DAYTON, Va. (WHSV) -- Kids love dressing up as scary monsters, but that might not be the only scare they get from a Halloween mask.
They can be scary both on the outside and inside due to germs.
Most people search for the perfect costume during the weeks prior to Halloween, which means trying on masks.
Most of the time, you're not the first one to try on a mask.
Jennifer Coffelt, a nurse practitioner at Carilion Clinic in Dayton, said to wipe the masks with a disinfectants that kill cold and flu viruses, "If someone who has tried it on prior to you has the flu or strep and that virus is still present in them and they've put the mask on their face, and then you pick it up and put on your face, you have just then exposed yourself to the virus, just by direct contact."
Doctors recommend that anything that touches your nose or mouth should be cleaned out, washed or at least wiped down before it's put on your face.
