HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -- Beginning Tuesday, tethering pets outdoors will be illegal in Hampton.

Violators of the new ordinance could face a misdemeanor charge.

Media outlets report that Hampton's City Council approved the ban in July. Its enforcement was delayed so that pet owners could be educated about the ordinance.
