Harrisonburg High School Named One of America's Most Challenging Schools

HARRISONBURG (WHSV) -- The Washington Post has released its annual list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” and Harrisonburg High School has once again been named.

According to The Washington Post, “just 9 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools” earned
placement on the list.

Of the 2,029 public and private high schools that made the list for 2014, Harrisonburg High School ranked 1,484, rising from its position at 1,516 on the 2013 list.

This year, Harrisonburg High School was ranked 90th out of 339 high schools in Virginia. One-hundred and sixteen Virginia high schools made the list.

Of the Virginia schools on the list, Harrisonburg High School has the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with a subsidized lunch rate of 65%.

“Our commitment to high expectations for all students remains unwavering,” said Dr. Scott Kizner, Superintendent of
Schools.

“This recognition as one of the most challenging high schools is something the entire Harrisonburg community should be proud of.”

The list is determined by an index developed by Washington Post education reporter Jay Mathews, which scores
schools based on "the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International
Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year [divided] by the number of seniors who graduated in May or
June.”

The listing also notes the Equity and Excellence (E&E) percentage for each school, which is the number of seniors
who scored 3 or higher on at least one college-level test during their high school career divided by the total number of
seniors. In 2013, the number of AP exams taken by HHS students at all grade levels increased from 417 to 477, with
71% earning scores of 3 or higher.
