HARRISONBURG, Va.---Harrisonburg City School board will ask the city council for funding to build a new school.

Superintendent Doctor Scott Kizner said the board is also seeking to hire an architecture firm to determine a location.

He said the board is interested in a location on or near the high school property because the city owns it.

If the council approves the measure, the board wants to turn Thomas Harrison Middle school into an elementary school.

The elementary school will house the pre-kindergarten program. This will replace the proposal of using the Lucy Simms Center for this purpose.

The board hopes the school to open in 2016.
