Harrisonburg Power Substation Catches Fire

HARRISONBURG Fire fighters like to work quickly in fire situations to put out the flames, but this one was a challenge for firefighters.

Chief Larry Shifflett said the department got a call about a fire on Smithland road at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

When fire fighters got to the scene, the power substation was on fire. They had to wait roughly an hour to start working on the fire, so harrisonburg electric commission could re-route the electrical lines to another station. Chief Shifflett said safety was why it took so long to put out the fire.

"Our main concern was having our people protected from the explosion here and making sure nobody got hurt from the electrical system itself," said Chief Shifflett.

The chief says power was disrupted for only an hour, since power was rerouted to another substation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
