Folks in Franklin, West Virginia voted for their mayor and five city council seats on Tuesday.
Eleven candidates ran for five available seats on city council. The mayor said more people were interested in running after a scandal in 2008 when the town customer relations supervisor at the time was indicted for embezzling money. She said after that person was convicted, more people were inspired to become a member of the council to make a difference.
One voter said she wanted people who will make a positive contribution to the community.
"I grew up in this county, in this town, and I feel like it's my duty to elect people who will serve us best," said Franklin voter Mary Bowers.
There was also a race for the town's mayor. Incumbent Mayor Pam Waybright ran against her current recorder, Mike Mallow.
Poll workers said they were surprised by the higher than average voter turn out.
