Homeless Shelter in Waynesboro Temporarily Closes

Waynesboro On Thursday morning, a homeless shelter exclusively for homeless women and children temporarily closed.

The shelter was originally opened in March on Fairfax Avenue to serve as a permanent facility for temporary housing. However, for the next three to four months no one will be living there. Four women and 11 children were staying inside the facility at the time of the closure, and now they are looking for another place to live.

According to Pastor Howard Miller, who helped run the facility, a number of factors led to the decision to close. Miller pointed to an inadequate disciplinary policy, as well as a goal-setting program for the women in need of improvement, as reasons for the closure.

Lakisha Haliburton is one of the women directly impacted by the closure. She is pregnant and news of the shelter closing was tough to take.

"We were up all night trying to figure out where we were going to go and what we were going to do," she said. "It's just very rough."

Haliburton didn't know where she would head to when the shelter closed in the late morning.

"I'll try to find a place to go if I don't have my baby today due to stress."

At least one local church worker was at the facility at the time of this report helping the women figure out where to move next. For women like Haliburton though, the next three to four months are now filled with uncertainty.

"It's going to be rough trying to get back on my feet and finding a place to go thats stable," she said.

Pastor Miller said on Thursday that staff at the shelter have been continuing to work together with the families to try and help them find new housing.
