HARRISONBURG, Va. Hundreds bought a sweet treat from Kline's Dairy Bar on Sunday, as part of national ice cream day.

The International Dairy Food Association reports, the U.S. ice cream industry made $10 billion in 2010. Nearly $7 billion came from take home ice cream sales.

For the Rodrigues family, ice cream is a tradition no matter what day it is. A member of the family used to own an ice cream shop.

"My grandparents owned an ice cream place so it is kind of in the family," said Eli Rodrigues.

For Heather Rodrigues, summer is all about ice cream.

"If you think of family picnics, you think of having ice cream, so it makes sense on this day that you would get together with your family and have a little bit of sugar and a whole lot of fun," said Rodrigues.

July was declared national ice cream month back in 1984.
