One Family Explains the Importance of Smoke Detectors

The investigation continues into a deadly mobile home fire in Rockingham County that claimed the lives of three people: including one child.

One thing is certain; the smoke detectors were not working at the time of the fire.

Down the road, Melinda and Joseph Arnaud take fire safety very seriously in their mobile home. They even bought extra smoke detectors.

This is one thing that Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Holloway would love to hear. He wants detectors in everyone's home.

"We want people to have working smoke detectors. A lot of time what we run into is people taking some detectors and taking the batteries for them and using them for games and toys and things like that," said Assistant Fire Chief Holloway.

The Arnauds have plenty of fire extinguishers around: even by their bed.

Another common cause of fires is space heaters. The Arnauds were able to get a heat pump: which is the safest way to heat a mobile home.

"We have had wood stoves, and we've had electric. But this heat pump is the easiest thing for old people like us that you've ever seen.
