HARRISONBURG, Va. -- You may notice a lot of foot traffic downtown in Harrisonburg on Saturday.

Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance and James Madison University are welcoming incoming students with the third annual Block Party.

The event is specifically geared toward incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Parts of downtown, including Franklin Street to Elizabeth Street will be reduced down to one lane.

South Main Street by Court Square will also be closed off, so students can safely walk through.

The block party will be from 7 until 10 p.m. on Saturday and students will take part in activities at Court Square and Turner Pavilion Park.

They'll have the chance to see safety demos by the police and fire department.

Kathy Sarver with JMU and the Block Party planning committee said that it's also a way to introduce incoming freshman to popular spots downtown and also help local businesses.

"Hopefully it supports our vendors and our merchants down there. It's an event that hopefully will bring the students all the way through from Franklin to Elizabeth street and beyond, so they can get to know what's down there and hopefully visit them before their senior year," said Sarver.
