STAUNTON, Va. -- The cost per inmate at Middle River Regional Jail is one of the lowest in the state. In 2012 it was $52.96 and leaders say it's low because they house inmates from other jurisdictions.

Middle River opened in 2006. Since then, other jails that have become so crowded, they sent their inmates to Middle River Regional Jail. The major at the jail said that has helped lower costs significantly, but the staff in each department also has tried different thing to keep costs even lower.

For example, the food service staff is able to keep the cost for three meals a day per inmate at just $3. The medical staff also reduced its costs.

Management staff sets goals at the start of every fiscal year to best use the budget they have. The management staff said that they pay the same taxes everyone else does and they want to have the most cost-effective system.
