HARRISONBURG -- The Massanutten Regional Library collected more than 1200 pounds of canned goods in January from people wanting to get out of paying fines.
The Food for Fines campaign collected non-perishable items to pay for overdue materials. When a customer donated a can of food, it erased a dollar from their late fees.
The campaign only ran for one week in January, but it was enough to beat last year's totals by 100 pounds. Community Relations Manager Cheryl Griffith said in 2011, the branches received 1100 pounds.
Griffith said it was a rewarding experience.
"We love to help out our area food banks because we know there are a lot of people in need, so obviously is very gratifying to call the food pantries and say we have lots of food for you to pick up."
She said some people donated to the cause at the main branch, even if they didn't have fines. The seven library branches donated the food to seven local pantries.
