Temperatures in the 90s and a day off of work for many due to Memorial Day created the perfect conditions for many pool goers at Gypsy Hill Park Pool in Staunton Monday.

The pool just opened for the season this weekend, and even before the gates opened at 11a.m. on Monday, a line of about 20 anxious pool goers was queued up outside.

Lifeguard Andrew Cox has been guarding at Gypsy Hill for four summers and he often sees a common risk that people generally don't associate with swimming.

"Be mindful of the temperatures and how long you are outside. Staying hydrated is really big. You get really dehydrated swimming in a pool and a lot of people don't realize that until they get out and they realize that I'm not feeling too well," explains Cox.

Lifeguards at the pool are extra vigilant of younger children when it comes to heat related problems. They require those under 18 to take a 15-minute break every hour.

"We call it an adult swim. Eighteen and above are allowed in mostly because anyone below 18 we think that most young kids don't know their limits. They want to swim all day and they want to have fun, and we definitely support that, but at the same time, safety is our number one concern," comments Cox.

He says pool patrons being mindful of their own safety helps the lifeguards do their jobs more efficiently, which in turn provides a safe and fun environment for everyone all summer long.

"I'm just looking for a fun and safe summer. I look forward for everyone to come, enjoy their time here, but also know that they are safe and that we are ensuring their safety while here," says Cox.

Lifeguards say the best way to keep from being dehydrated at the pool is to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.
