Preparation for Livestock Show

Updated: Fri 10:49 PM, Aug 17, 2012

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va -- For some participants, getting ready for the livestock show is a year-long process. Ashton Terry has been raising cows since she was born.

She is 16 and comes from a family of farmers and she has three cows. Ashton said it takes a lot of hard work to get them ready for shows at the fair. The hard work pays off. She has won an award for one of her cows in the past.

Aside from the work, the process is an emotional one. Ashton said her cows almost become like one of her pets.

"You get attached because you spend so much quality time working with it and trying to get it to where you want it, and by the time it's there, you spent so many months with it that you're just kinda like, 'I don't want to let go of it,'" said Ashton.

A lot of people came out to the cattle auction at the fair Friday. The cows are then sold for their meat.
