STAUNTON, Va -- A Staunton man will make a big-screen debut Friday when the movie, “Lincoln,” which is about the 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, debuts nationwide.

“Imagine that one day you're sitting at your desk staring into your computer screen, and the next day, you're the focal point of an epic Hollywood scene,” said Terry Shulman, a Staunton actor in “Lincoln.”

That was exactly what happened to Shulman. A friend persuaded him to show up to audition for “Lincoln” in Richmond.

“I finally said, 'What the heck? I'll give it a shot.' I stood in line for two hours and thought, 'This is absolutely ridiculous. Why am I doing this? This is pointless.'”

The rest is history.

“I'm one of three Union colonels who are part of the peace delegation.”

Shulman appears in the film and in the movie's trailer on a horse.

“One of the questions on the form is: Can you ride a horse really well? I don't know if I can ride a horse really well, but there was a yes box and a no box, so, of course, I checked yes.”

That landed him his role, working alongside 150 crew members and 300 extras. Shulman had no idea what part he would play, but he did spot himself six times when he saw the movie in a sneak peek.

“For a non-actor, it was pretty thrilling.”

It is a thrill he hopes people will feel watching the movie for years to come. Shulman worked with Director Steven Spielberg during the filming and he said working with Spielberg is like working with a supernatural force.

A Harrisonburg High School graduate is also in the movie. Drew Sease plays the role of David Homer Bates. According to his Facebook page, he graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 2008.
