HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Many local businesses are trying to take advantage of Cyber Monday. They're trying to encourage people here in the valley to buy locally with special online deals.
Cyber Monday can be a challenge for small businesses because many rely on human interaction or some sort of sales touch.
At Byler Barns and Backyards in Harrisonburg, the owner says they are offering deals specifically for today, and are emailing customers. The company sells barns or other items for backyards.
Owner Steve Byler says the change reflects the move to online sales. This time of year can be kind of slow for them, and so the goal today is to tap into some of the hype. "Today, Cyber Monday, is a big shopping day for the internet, and we assume that there are going to be a lot of people, even folks at work. They're supposed to be working, but they're going to be shopping on Cyber Monday online, so we thought it would be a great chance to reach out, touch those folks, and hopefully pick up a little business today," said Byler.
All of this comes just a few days after Small Business Saturday, where many local businesses offered deals for the holiday weekend. Byler Backyards didn't, and hopes to find success online.
