The Virginia State Senate voted to expand Medicaid in Virginia. This comes a day after a Virginia Organizing, a local grassroots group, lobbied for the expansion in Richmond.
Elizabeth La Grua is a volunteer for Virginia Organizing. She said it was exciting to be able to speak to lawmakers about the issues she thinks are the most important.
The Medicaid expansion is part of the Affordable Care Act.
La Grua said expanding Medicaid will help those who can't afford health care on their own.
"It will serve about 400,000 residents of Virginia at no cost to Virginia, so this is critical because if we don't take the money, the money goes to other states. They get the benefits and what do we get? Our residents will go without health care when they need it," said La Grua.
La Grua said she's happy the local delegates listened to the concerns of Virginia Organizing.
