AAA Mid- Atlantic expects 970,000 drivers to hit the road for the upcoming July 4 holiday.

The travel forecast will go down 1.4 percent compared to last year, according to AAA. The reason behind it has to do with the holiday being shorter compared to last year's six day holiday period.

Jonathan Overby works as an Assistant Innkeeper at the Stonewall Jackson Inn in downtown Harrisonburg.

He said they are preparing for a busy holiday weekend, but not Independence day.

"Because it falls on a Thursday, it will limit the number this year as opposed if it was a weekend, obviously, it will be busier," said Overby.

Currently, half of the rooms are booked for July 4. Most reservations are for the weekend, but they anticipate some walk-ins.

"We are going to run at a high capacity. We have 10 rooms here at the B&B. We will probably fill it up by the time it comes," said Overby.

Massanutten Resort Director of Activities & Concierge Services Jeff Reid said visitors have made nearly 1,700 reservations, which is about 95 percent of the resorts' capacity.

"Most of the folks that come here do stay for the entire week so we will be ready for them whenever they get here," said Reid.

Reid said this is not unusual for the independence day holiday.

"Certainly one of the busier ones. We also see great occupancy during the Christmas and New Year's holiday, but generally all the holidays here because we are a family resort," said Reid.

He said the resort usually puts together events that include live music and fireworks to entertain families.

Overby said memorial day and valentine's day are usually busier.

"It runs pretty middle of the pack, especially with the major holidays," said Overby.

Overby said downtown events tend to draw more people into the inn.

If you are planning to travel by car, AAA recommends to avoid July 3 and 7 because they are expected to be busy.
