STAUNTON, Va ---- Mary Baldwin College's fighting squirrel mascot is called Gladys. The squirrel itself came from founder Mary Baldwin's family crest. It has stuck around since then to represent college athletics.
The school has several all-American team players this year and leaders of the athletics department expect to make headlines in cross country and tennis.
Director of Athletics Sharon Spalding said Gladys represents how to be a team player.
“Taking that leap from one tree to another and you don't make it, be just like a squirrel and just climb right back up. Get back up on your feet,” said Spalding. “So, not only do we teach them to take risks and how to win and succeed, but we also teach them what to do when you don't win and fall right down and pick right back up again and keep going.”
Other school mascots on the list. They include the Virginia Tech hokiebird, University of Delaware's blue hen and Tim the Beaver of MIT.
