A story WHSV aired Monday inspired one local business owner to follow the Golden Rule and help Meals on Wheels get food to neighbors in need.
Staunton's Meals on Wheels program is in desperate need of volunteers to deliver hot meals to local senior citizens, but high gas prices are holding some volunteers back.
After hearing the earlier story, the owner of Rocky's Gold and Silver in Weyers Cave, Rocky Simonetti, decided he wanted to help.
He is donating $1,000 a month for gas money to help volunteers deliver the food.
"Gas is getting so high, $3.05 a gallon now. You know, it probably cost them $25 or $30 a week to deliver that food. If they're on a fixed income, they haven't got that extra money like that to do that, so I thought that by donating money for the gas, that would get more people to deliver the food for them," explains Simonetti.
He says he hopes other local business owners will follow suit because helping volunteers benefits every senior citizen receiving a meal.
