From house to house, mail carrier Tom Miller works hard everyday to deliver the mail, but on days like Thursday, the brutal temperatures make his workday downright uncomfortable.
"I can't say it's fun, no, I mean it's still work. You sweat a lot, you're drenched, you never get a chance to cool off, so it's not the best time," Miller said.
So how does Miller keep cool while working outside all day?
"The main thing is I drink a lot of water. I've got a 2 gallon jug of water in the truck with me and if you look at it, it's gigantic. It looks like I'm going on a picnic with my family or something, but it's all for me and a day like this I'll usually drink it all up," Miller explained.
Still Miller says these are not the worst conditions he deals with during the year: he'll take the heat over snow any day.
"I'd rather prefer working under the heat just because it's easier to get around, you don't have ice driving. It's very hilly in Staunton, so snow and ice poses quite a problem," Miller commented.
On extremely hot days, Miller is looking out for more than just his own safety, but also those in the communities he serves.
"If we see an elderly person who is outside and who doesn't seem to be looking too well, I'll certainly stop and ask them how they're doing, if they need any help, I'm happy to help them," Miller said.
Some of the other things mail carriers do to keep cool in this heat are to use ice packs as well as wear wide brimmed hats.
