A major part of the State Fair of Virginia is coming to Rockingham County.

Right now more parts of the fair are still being auctioned off.

The Rockingham County Fairgrounds will now have the livestock component of the State Fair. This will bring a whole new show to the area this Fall.

But how will the State Fair survive now without a major event?

"Things will play out, we're going to be watching it very closely, but it's not going to be the State Fair of Virginia that people are used to," said Jeff Ishee, General Manager of the Rockingham County Fair.

He says the state fair won't be the same without its livestock exhibit, but he's glad it's all coming to Rockingham County.

"At this point, the State Fair of Virginia is not going to be anywhere near what it used to be because a major component of it is coming to Rockingham County and to be quite candid, we're excited about that," said Ishee.

He says the livestock show will bring thousands of people to the area, which is good news for the local economy.

The property of the State Fair was just sold at an auction after it went bankrupt this winter. Now all the 'stuff' from the fair is being auctioned off online.

That's something that Ishee is looking forward to.

"And it's kind of mundane and boring to most people but it's what makes a fairgrounds work," said Ishee. "Folding chairs, tables, hog pens, cattle gates, PA systems all sorts of things like that."

All necessities that he says would make the Rockingham County Fair more modern and efficient.

As for the State Fair this year, he says big changes are still to come.

"But now the State Fair of Virginia is a for-profit business, they won't have any volunteers, they'll have employees, so it'll be very interesting to see how this plays out," said Ishee.

Ishee says the livestock show will be in Rockingham County in October.

If you're interested in getting a piece of the State Fair, the online auction of all those items ends Thursday at 6 PM.
