HURRICANE, W.Va. (AP) -- A man is dead following a wreck during a high-speed police chase in Putnam County.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards tells media outlets that the victim was suspected of taking items from a store in Hurricane. Hurricane police saw the man and pursued him onto I-64.

Edwards says the vehicles' speeds reached 100 miles per hour. The man's car turned sideways and hit the back of a parked tractor-trailer as he apparently tried to enter a rest stop.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
