ELKTON, Va. (WHSV) -- Drug maker Merck is slashing 8,500 more jobs worldwide.
We reached out to the Merck in Elkton to see if we can expect layoffs in our area, but Merck would not go into specifics about where layoffs would take place.
The new cuts are in addition to the 7,500 cuts previously announced, which in total amounts to 20 percent of Merck's workforce.
None of the job cuts have happened yet.
Merck said it hopes to save about $2.5 billion annually by 2015.
The company will also move its headquarters from Whitehouse Station, N. J. to its existing facilities in nearby Kenilworth, N. J. which is closer to New York City.
