STAUNTON, Va. -- Thursday was a very important day for movie enthusiasts because the Oscar nominations were released.
Some consider Virginia's greatest contribution to the film world in 2012 to be Steven Spielberg's film, Lincoln. That movie received 12 Oscar nominations, including one for its talented star actor.
“Anytime an actor can portray a character and you really forget about who the actor is you know they're doing a good job,” said Roger Campbell, a movie enthusiast.
Right after the Oscar nominations were announced, Campbell went to Staunton's Visulite Cinemas to watch Quentin Tarantino's movie, Django Unchained, which is nominated for best picture.
“I hope it will be as good as they have said it was. I like Jamie Foxx a lot. He's a great actor. I'd like to see him win.”
Seven other films, including Zero Dark Thirty, the dramatization of the hunt for Osama bin Laden, and the Silver Linings Playbook, are also nominated for the best picture title.
“That movie kind of came out of nowhere,” said Kajun Waybright, the general manager of Visulite, “I feel like if we're being honest with ourselves, we're all a little messed up and this movie's about two people who are sort of emotionally, a wreck, who cross paths. Not only is it the best film of the year, in my opinion, but it's also a perfect date movie.”
With nine films up for the best picture and more than a month until the winners are announced, there's plenty of time to make your case for which should win. There's also plenty of time to catch up on the ones you didn't see.
“I think we could potentially bring a few films back, like Argo, Life of Pi. Life of Pi was nominated for like 11 Oscar's. Argo is one of my favorites that people may have missed. You might see those again in a month or so.”
The Visulite starts showing Zero Dark Thirty on Friday. It and many other Oscar nominated films are playing at theaters across the Valley.
