BROADWAY, Va -- U-Turn for Christ is hoping to house its rehab facility on a farm, which is a little close for C.L. Rexrode's comfort.

"Yeah, I can see the house behind me," said Rexrode.

Rexrode said the neighborhood is very open and everyone is friendly with each other. They never worry about safety, but with the rehab facility two drive ways down, he is concerned things may change.

"My whole concern is, the families around here, with the little kids still in elementary school,” said Rexrode. “What kind of assurance do we have that nothing's going to happen to them? That no one's going to wander into another house, or break into someone's car? And hurt our kind of sense of security of where we live."

U-turn for Christ's Director and Pastor Nathaniel Daniel grew up here. He went through the program in California and wants to bring its positive results back to the Valley.

He said in 20 years no one has ever left U-Turn for Christ and committed a crime in the local community.

"A person who comes to U-Turn for Christ is in no way a danger to the community,” said Daniel. “As a matter of fact, we like to think, we're a blessing to the community, a beacon of hope, a beacon of light.

Safety isn't the only issue.

"With a drug rehab center 100 yards from our house, the property value will go down,” said Rexrode. “So if they choose to resell the house, it's going to be harder."

To Daniel, the center is an example of hope for the community.

“That people know, that at that location lives are being transformed and changed, families are being reconciled, individuals are being brought back into health. And that is always good for our community," said Daniel.

The approval of the special permit to house the facility was discussed at the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors meeting. Plenty of neighbors attended.
