FISHERSVILLE, Va. -- Neighbors used to enjoy a quiet, beautiful view behind their homes, but that changed this past summer.

“Now it's a view of garbage,” said Cory Brant, who lives behind a junk pile, “It's quite awful and none of us like it. I mean, it's not refreshing to go out in your backyard and see a giant heaping pile of metal.”

Back in June, Valley Recycling opened without the homeowners around it noticing it much. One neighbor, Becky Wells, didn't pay it much attention until her cousin came to visit.

“He said, 'What is that racket, Becky?' I said, 'I don't know.' I said, 'It just started the other day.' He said, 'I believe I'd look into it,' which I did,” said Wells.

What she eventually found out was that the land directly behind her house was zoned for industrial use. Nothing could be done to stop a business from using it as they wanted.

Valley Recycling already received some complaints from homeowners on the other side of their property. Luckily, Oly Hatton, the manager, is willing to work with his neighbors.

“Since the concerns have come up, and out of respect for them, I have shipped over 1000 gross tons in the month of December. I have another order this month. We're moving the pile levels down,” said Hatton.

The Department of Environmental Quality visited Valley Recycling after those complaints came, and the company received good reviews. The staff said they were committed to doing things differently and maintaining good relations.

“I would invite anybody to come here and see how we're doing it different, because I guarantee you, you're going to have great service. You're going to see that there is a difference. There is a right way and we're doing it.”

Hatton said the scrap pile will be significantly lower within the next three months. Neighbors said they're happy to hear how he's running his facility. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
