HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Rudy Dean, who lives in Rockingham County, is charged with aggravated malicious wounding for shooting another man in the neck last January.
Dean was back in court for a pre-trial hearing on Thursday. For now, Dean is waiting for his trial to start in April.
Dean has worn a GPS monitoring device for the past five months.
It's that GPS device he wore and the company behind it that caused controversy on Thursday according to court documents.
Associate Pastor Micheal Donovan works alongside Pastor Cindy Carr at a church in Harrisonburg. Carr's behind the hundreds of supporters who want to free Dean.
“We just continue to stand for justice,” said Carr.
Court documents show Donovan has faced several felony charges and is on probation in Virginia for nine years.
He served as executive director for Nexus Programs, the company that gave dean his GPS unit. He said there is no conflict of interest, just desperation coming from the prosecution.
“The Commonwealth Attorney seems interested in attacking anyone who supports Rudy Dean, or more specifically, anyone who disagrees with the Commonwealth Attorney,” said Donovan.
Donovan said his professional relationship with Carr has no bearing on the case. He also said anyone questioning Dean's whereabouts can pull his GPSs record and make sure he obeyed the law.
Donovan said this is an army the assistant Commonwealth's attorney wants silenced.
“They're going to come after you,” said Donovan, “They're going to call you names. They're going to take the attention from a case that they can't win because the evidence isn't on their side and put it on people who have nothing to do with the case.”
Donovan stepped down as executive director of Nexus Programs to become a law student, but he still serves on the advisory board for the company. He said Nexus Programs was happy to help in Dean's case.
Dean is scheduled to be back in court in April.
The assistant Commonwealth's attorney involved in the Dean case had no comment for WHSV.
