HARRISONBURG,Va. (WHSV)-- The Harrisonburg School Board has approved the building site for the location of a new elementary school.
The original idea was that the current middle school, Thomas Harrison, would be renovated into an elementary school. But the school board agreed in a 4-2 vote that and this new location would be more suitable for an elementary school.
The meeting, which took place on South Main Street at the City Council Chambers in downtown Harrisonburg,
it was unveiled that the new school's location will be across from the current high school on Garbers Church Road.
The architect for the project is VDMO Architects, who were just approved to build. The meeting was a rare public forum for parents, teachers, and community members to voice their concern over what seemed like a last minute switch.
Becky Stum, a parent of middle schoolers, has concerns over the longevity of the new plan.
"I basically came to find out the reasons why they kind of shifted gears in the middle of the stream.
As far as going from planning a middle school to an elementary school. They answered my questions.
I have two children who will be going to Thomas Harrison one is a rising fifth grader. I guess my
concern at this point is not necessarily the cost but the long term," said Stum.
The goal is to have the new elementary school up and running by 2017.
