There is a new option when it comes to getting flu shots this season.

A new smaller needle less than one-tenth of an inch long that directly injects the flu vaccine under the skin is available on a limited basis.

The new type of shot is supposed to lessen the amount of pain associated with receiving the vaccine with a traditional needle, but right now is only available for adults.

Other forms of the flu shot, including a nasal mist and the traditional injection are expected to be readily available this season, with at least 166 million doses expected to be manufactured.

Doctors say the elderly and young children are at highest risk of getting the flu and say its important to get the flu short as early as possible because it can take up to two weeks for it to become effective.
