Nurse Recruiter Explains Job Rates for New Graduates

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A new survey out shows that 62 % of newly graduated nurses around the nation will have trouble finding jobs in the next year.

This is according to, which is a nursing education and career resource.

A nurse recruiter at Augusta Health said the hospital hires new graduates twice a year based on graduation dates.

Already, Augusta Health employes have hired 20 new graduates in the last 18 months. But the recruiter said getting a job as a new nurse is more competitive.

Donna Mikolay said it has been a struggle for new graduates to get positions in the last two years.

The economy is a major factor in the hiring difficulties. While some part-time nurses picked up a full time shift at the hospital, others held off on retirement.

Mikolay said having those experienced nursing positions filled is essential because those nurses help teach the new nurses skills.

"For every one position we are able to open we probably get about 10 applications from a new graduate so the numbers are not balanced. A couple years ago you may have turned down three or four nurses. Beyond nursing school we have a larger candidate pool to choose from," Mikolay said.

The hospital staff is looking to hire experienced nurses right now and they also have a residency program in place to help new graduates.
